“Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus”—this is the most beautiful and poignant advice a pastor can offer his congregation. Pastor Papin took us back to the Old Testament to help us grasp the fervent expectation with which God’s men and women watched for the promise God had made, first to Abraham, then to Isaac, and finally to Jacob. He made us realize that their faith in God—as well as their hope—was entirely focused on this specific promise; a promise that none of them, in fact, saw fulfilled in their lifetimes. And yet, each of them kept their eyes fixed on that promise. Today, we who are Christians not only know that the promise made to the patriarchs was embodied in Jesus Christ, but we also actively enjoy the blessings of that promise: God’s grace and forgiveness, and eternal salvation. It is regrettable, however, that we, who have received this very promise that the patriarchs so eagerly awaited, still so often lack faith in God and His will to save us. When we enter God's presence to pray, our prayers invariably focus on what we want Him to do for us. When we face difficulties, all we want is for God to remove those obstacles from our lives. Consequently, in our prayers, we often set aside God's grace and favor—and the opportunity to worship Him—to make room for our own desires. It is not forbidden to cry out or lament in our prayers; however, it is crucial to remember *to whom* we are addressing ourselves—to humble ourselves before God and implore His favor. Often, we believe ourselves to be so spiritual that we completely forget that our sinful nature inclines us to sin. When this happens—and we feel unworthy of God's presence—we turn away from Him and seek our own ways to reconcile with Him. In these situations, the Enemy seizes the opportunity to influence our decisions, leading us to believe that God no longer needs us. This is especially true when we rely on our own personal efforts to walk with God and please Him.
